About This Level

In Level 1, all our pieces were in the “C” Position, over the notes C-D-E-F-G. But there are many other notes on the piano, of course, and in Level 2 we’ll get used to playing in some completely new hand positions. We’ll also learn about the basics of rhythm, including whole, half and quarter notes, as well as time signatures (which tell us how the beats are grouped) and dynamics (which tell us how loudly to play.)

With these basics, you’ll already be able to play a few famous pieces that everyone will recognize!

New Hand Positions

In this tutorial, we’ll begin moving away from the “C position” and begin exploring a wider range of the piano keyboard.

Half Notes, Quarter Notes, and Dotted Quarter Notes

In this tutorial, we’ll learn about three new note values: half notes, quarter notes, and dotted half notes.

Time Signatures and Dynamics

In this tutorial, we’ll learn about simple time signatures (2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 time) as well as dynamics– indications which tell us how loudly or softly to play.

Quiz: Level 2 Theory

In this interactive quiz, you can test your knowledge of the piano music concepts we’ve covered in this level.
